Carson has written award-winning children’s music and other resource materials with health messages showcasing her influential children’s character, “Choosy.” Early educators and child care providers use Choosy to enhance their efforts at promoting healthy habits, and more recently, dentists and pediatraians have included Choosy to complement their patient education efforts to emphasize the importance of healthy behaviors and choices.

Carson has served as an expert trainer for the obesity prevention initiatives, “I Am Moving, I Am Learning” and “Little Voices for Healthy Choices,” launched nationwide by the Office of Head Start. She served on the leadeship team of “WV Games for Health,” a series of statewide projects that demonstrated significant changes in the health indicators of obese children as a result of playing active video games. Carson currently serves on the advisory board of Head Start Body Start National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play.

In the effort to address the critical issue of reducing childhood obesity by promoting a more active lifestyle, the Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative sponsored a three day Live Healthy Summit involving key leaders in Kankakee County.   A highlight of this event occurred on May 2, 2012 where nationally-known fitness expert Mark Fenton spent the day with area community leaders to design and implement strategies that encourage residents to be more active by walking and bicycling more frequently.  Mark’s presentation was followed by a panel discussion featuring officials from three different mid-west communities who have been successful in making their communities more pedestrian-friendly.  This event was a tremendous success and provided the launching point for the City of Kankakee to implement the Complete Streets initiative.  This event was captured on video and is available to you by clicking here.

On March 31, 2012, the Pioneering Healthier Communities in conjunction with Kankakee Community College sponsored Linda Carson at the Kankakee County Child Development Conference.  Linda is a national leader for the “I Am Moving-I Am Learning” Curriculum, which has been adopted nationally by Head Start.  This event was captured on video and is available to you by clicking here.here
