In the effort to address the critical issue of reducing childhood obesity by promoting a more active lifestyle, the Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative sponsored a three day Live Healthy Summit involving key leaders in Kankakee County. A highlight of this event occurred on May 2, 2012 where nationally-known fitness expert Mark Fenton spent the day with area community leaders to design and implement strategies that encourage residents to be more active by walking and bicycling more frequently. Mark’s presentation was followed by a panel discussion featuring officials from three different mid-west communities who have been successful in making their communities more pedestrian-friendly. This event was a tremendous success and provided the launching point for the City of Kankakee to implement the Complete Streets initiative. On March 31, 2012, the Pioneering Healthier Communities in conjunction with Kankakee Community College sponsored Linda Carson at the Kankakee County Child Development Conference. Linda is a national leader for the “I Am Moving-I Am Learning” Curriculum, which has been adopted nationally by Head Start.
